Storm Week Meals: What Our Family of Five Actually Ate This Week

Some weeks feel smooth and organized.

This was not one of those weeks.

Between the storm, changing schedules, school being canceled on Friday, and even a power outage, this week felt a little chaotic. But like most weeks in our house, we still had to figure out breakfast, pack lunches, and get dinner on the table for our family of five.

That’s really what HomeCooking360 is all about. Not perfect meals. Not fancy meal plans. Just real-life food that works for a busy family.

This week, we leaned on a few things that made life much easier: Sam’s Club rotisserie chicken, Thermos lunches, leftovers, and a couple of fun kitchen tools that helped meals feel special without adding too much work.

Here’s what we actually ate this week, what worked, and a few little kitchen wins along the way.

Grocery Snapshot

Our weekly grocery total was $435.

This week’s shopping included:

  • 3/9 – Sam’s Club: $158

  • 3/11 – Sam’s Club: $132

  • 3/11 – Walmart: $10

  • 3/14 – Foodland: $135

It was one of those weeks where a few key grocery items stretched across multiple meals, which always feels like a win.

What We Ate This Week

Monday

Breakfast: Toast with Nutella
Lunch: Omurice
Dinner: Seared ahi

We bought an ahi block from Sam’s Club and made seared ahi for dinner. This ended up being one of those meals that reminds me how simple food can still feel special. I used a kitchen torch to sear each piece based on each family member’s preference, which made it fun and a little personalized.

The girls really love this meal. Honestly, they like it better than kaiten sushi.

Tuesday

Breakfast: Baguette bread with Nutella
Lunch: Soba with hardboiled egg

Dinner: Shrimp, asparagus, tako, and mushroom Japanese pasta

The soba lunch worked really well because we kept the sauce cool in the double-wall Thermos. It’s one of those small things that makes packed lunches easier and more realistic.

Dinner was a favorite. The shrimp, asparagus, tako, and mushroom Japanese pasta is one of those meals the kids almost always enjoy, which makes it worth repeating. It feels a little special, but it’s still very doable at home.

Wednesday

Breakfast: Cheese toast
Lunch: Chow fun with Arabiki sausage

Dinner: Chicken summer rolls

Lunch was chow fun with Arabiki sausage, packed warm in the Thermos. Keeping lunch warm really helps on busy school days and gives us a little more variety than the usual sandwich routine.

Dinner was one of my favorite meals of the week. We made chicken summer rolls using rice paper and Sam’s Club rotisserie chicken, and the kids wrapped their own. Meals like this are always a win because everyone gets involved. It’s healthier, fresh, and a little interactive, which makes dinner more fun.

Thursday

Breakfast: Toast with Nutella
Lunch: Chicken sandwich

Dinner: Chicken curry

This was another day where the rotisserie chicken really came through for us. We used it for lunch sandwiches and then again for dinner in chicken curry.

For the curry, I diced the vegetables smaller instead of using larger potato chunks, and that worked really well. The carrots made the curry more flavorful, and the smaller vegetables blended into the dish in a way that made it easier for everyone to eat.

Meals like this remind me how much easier dinner can be when one ingredient can do double duty.

Friday

No school because of the storm

Breakfast: Curry toast and prosciutto toast

Lunch: Frozen unagi and Ichimon ramen
Dinner: Leftover curry rice

Friday was all about being flexible.

There was no school because of the storm, and at one point we lost power, so dinner ended up being leftover curry rice once the power came back. Not every meal needs to be exciting. Sometimes the best meal is the one that is already made and easy to heat up when things settle down.

Breakfast felt a little more fun with curry toast and prosciutto toast, which was a nice way to start a stormy day.

Saturday

Breakfast: Eggs and rice
Lunch: Sliders
Dinner: Takoyaki and steak rolls

Saturday had more of a weekend feel. Our friend bought sliders for lunch, which made the day easier.

For dinner, we had friends over and made takoyaki and steak rolls. The takoyaki grill always makes things more fun, and it turns dinner into something everyone can gather around. It’s the kind of meal that feels casual but memorable, especially when you’re cooking and sharing food with friends.

Sunday

Brunch: Pumpkin spice pancakes

We woke up late, so breakfast turned into brunch, and pumpkin spice pancakes felt like a good fit for a slower start to the day. After a week that felt a little stressful and off schedule, a cozy brunch was a nice way to reset.

What Made Life Easier This Week

A few things really helped this week:

1. Rotisserie chicken saved us

We used Sam’s Club rotisserie chicken for:

  • chicken summer rolls

  • chicken sandwiches

  • chicken curry

That one purchase helped cover multiple meals and took some pressure off during a busy week.

2. Thermos lunches gave us more options

Warm chow fun and cool soba both worked really well. That flexibility makes lunch-packing feel much less repetitive.

3. A few kitchen tools made meals more fun

The kitchen torch made the seared ahi feel special, and the takoyaki grill made dinner with friends easy and interactive.

What Worked This Week

This week reminded me that feeding a family doesn’t have to look perfect to be meaningful.

Some of our best meals came from:

  • repurposing one ingredient into multiple meals

  • letting the kids build or customize their own food

  • using leftovers without feeling guilty about it

  • keeping meals simple when life gets unpredictable

The storm definitely changed the flow of the week, but having flexible meal ideas helped us roll with it.

Final Thoughts

This week felt messy, windy, and a little off track, but we still had some really good meals.

That’s usually how it goes in real life.

Sometimes success in the kitchen is not about cooking something impressive. Sometimes it’s just about using what you have, making a meal your family will actually eat, and getting through the week with a few small wins.

This week, those wins looked like seared ahi, Thermos lunches, rotisserie chicken, homemade curry, takoyaki with friends, and pumpkin spice pancakes at brunch.

And honestly, that feels like a pretty good week.
